Overview
The app uses the camera on your device to scan barcodes - for updating your inventory, and picking orders - as well as taking product photos. On both iOS and Android, the app will ask you for permission to use the camera when you first attempt to do either of these actions. If you decline the camera permission, the app will give you an error and return you to whatever you were doing previously. The camera permission is not required to use the Channelup app - you will still be able to edit products, and view the news feed and your dashboard. However, we strongly recommend that you enable the camera permission for the Channelup app.
The app will only use the camera during app usage, and the app will never use your camera without your explicit permission (eg. starting a scan session or selecting the option to use your camera to take product photos). All barcode scanning is processed on your device, and the camera “feed” is never sent back to us - only the actual barcode itself, as text. For product images, when you confirm that you wish to add the selected photo, we remove any “identifiable data” before sending the photo to Channelup servers, such as EXIF data (which contains GPS location data, device data etc.). Enabling Camera Permissions
iOS
Enabling the camera permission for the app on iOS devices is easy to do. Follow these steps:
- Go to the Settings app. By default, this is on the first page of the home screen. If you can’t find it, swipe down to open Spotlight Search and search for Settings.
- With the Settings app open, you should see the name associated with the Apple ID the device is using at the top of the screen, along with the settings for Wi-Fi, Mobile Data, Aeroplane Mode etc. If you don’t see these settings, try tapping the back button at the top left until you can see them.
- Scroll down until you see an item that says Channelup. Tap the Channelup entry in the list.
- Make sure the Camera permission is set to on (green).
- Open the Channelup app again. The app will restart, and you will be able to use camera-related features.
If you cannot enable the camera, try the following:
- If the device is a company-owned device, you may see a message beneath the Apple ID header that says “This device is supervised and managed by (company name).”. If this message appears, you may be unable to enable the camera on the device at all, as it may be locked by the device’s MDM profile. Contact your device administrator (usually your company's IT department), as they will need to allow your device to use the camera permission.
- If your device has parental controls enabled, it is possible that the Camera has been disabled. Ask whoever manages your device to enable the Camera feature.
- Try opening the Camera app that comes with the device. If the camera doesn’t work, contact Apple Support. If the camera does work, open a ticket with us.
Android
As every Android device model is different, these instructions may not work for your device - however, they should work for the majority of Android devices. Try the following:
- On your device, find and open the Settings app.
- Tap the “Apps & notifications” setting.
- Find the Channelup option in the list, and tap it. If it doesn’t appear, tap See all apps, or App info.
- Tap Permissions.
- Find the Camera setting, and then choose “Only while using the app”. You can also select “Ask every time”, so the app has to ask to use the camera every time you use a feature that utilises the camera on your device.
- Open the Channelup app again. The app will restart, and you will be able to use camera-related features.
If these instructions do not work, please consult the User Guide for your device, or contact your device manufacturer’s support. We will likely be unable to assist you with enabling the Camera permission as every device is different.
